U for ABC Wednesday

ABC Wednesday offers U as the prompt.

Unicorns appealed to me when I was a child and not much has changed. This little guy was wasting away on a Goodwill shelf several decades back when I latched on to him for use as a water channeler in a summertime desktop fountain. A little slow this year, I haven't rebuilt one but the time is close.

Wikipedia has this to say: Marianna Mayer has observed (The Unicorn and the Lake), "The unicorn is the only fabulous beast that does not seem to have been conceived out of human fears. In even the earliest references he is fierce yet good, selfless yet solitary, but always mysteriously beautiful. He could be captured only by unfair means, and his single horn was said to neutralize poison."

What's not to like about unicorns?

My poetry books North of Summer and South of Winter are now available at Amazon and, as always, available from my LuluBookstore in print or as download.

Now isn't that a new idea (to me). Of course, unicorns aren't scary and all the others are! I wonder why.

Magical creatures, - and true, what's not to like about them! Your little fellow is very interesting.

My niece and my daughter LOVE unicorns. My daughter has 2, one which serves as a handbag.

I like unicorns. Mustn't feed them though - you never rid of them then.

He's a beauty and I love wandering through Goodwill looking for odd bits of pretty.

He's rather lovely, isn't he? I used to love to read about unicorns too - did you ever read 'The Last Unicorn' by Peter Beagle? It's not perhaps a cosy book, but I found it very absorbing.

yup, I bet he *does* make a cute, little fountain...great idea, and a perfect "U" word! (mythical lore really interests me, and I didn't know the horn was able to neutralize poisons; that's very interesting...thanks for sharin'.)

Have a great week!

I agree, what's not to like about unicorns. I will forever think of you now when I see a unicorn. Have a great day. Hope your feeling better.

Interesting choice of "U". Indeed, unicorn is always a such beautiful animal in the fairy tale. Congratulation for the publication of your poetry book.

You are right - they are always seen in a good light in any story that includes them.

Well, I guess the only not so good thing about a unicorn would be to be impaled on this single horn he has. But that might be thinking too far...

We might have needed some of that kindness - pity we don't have them.

What a great choice for U.
Unicorns have something so strong and noble about them. Fortunately they don't really exist. We humans would have found a way to make them extinct anyway.

Oh, and thanks for your sweet comment on my Nectaroscordum unwrapping post ;-)

I've always loved unicorns, and they're one of my granddaughters' favorites! Thanks for the background on them to explain why they were such good creatures. This one certainly would look good atop a fountain.

Sue, I found this so interesting. In The Name of the Rose written by Eco he told of monks during the times of the Inquisition drawing pictures of unicorns alongside giraffes thinking them both mythical since they had never seen either one.
