A Virgin List for BigTentPoetry

Big Tent Poetry prompts the writer to pen a poem using some form of aphrodisiac.

A Virgin List

a simple string of words
tangles with ghosts
my head presses to the glass
tomorrow is overcome by past

i wish myself a virgin list
like a box of unused notes
nouns that ramble free
without a thought attached

verbs that let me float
out of bounds, above details
adverbs to repel failings
forget regrets and guilts

to skim beyond the true
I want to fall in love with new
with a fresh string of words
alone and all my own

Slow Walk for Magpie Tales

Magpie Tales #16 offers an onsite image for prompt. Please follow the link to see the image, read what others wrote and play along.

Slow Walk

flat as waning seas
before embers of the dying sun

a brown shoe phase
bridged a span of neon years

alchemy of mercurial drab
reheeled plans, revamped her days

walked her from stiletto reds
to the pacing of plain espadrilles

that brown shoe tide
held her to the waning sea

S for ABC Wednesday

ABC WEDNESDAY ROUND 6: S is For...

Sand Fantasy

There's is very little more entrancing than seeing Ilana Yahav create her world famous sand art. She draws with her fingers in sand on a lighted glass table to the accompaniment of beautiful background music. Spell-binding. Stunning. Spectacular.

Her website provides more information as well as nine video clips that are incredibly enjoyable. She also presents a small video collection on YouTube. Each video can be enjoyed time after time!

She's a stellar sand artist!

Tale of Scales for Magpie Tales

Magpie Tales offers an image for prompt. Please follow the link to see the photo. My first thought was of grunion. My second thought was the same. My third... Result:

Tale of Scales

lemming-like
they leap to damp sand
intent on lodging spawn

     wild-eyed tourists
     with visions of pretense
     links to submarine sighting

     cart empty tubs for take
     at the full of moon
     when tiny bodies jump

from the high tide of sea
meet with clumsy hands
and heavy thrashing feet

Itinerant for BigTentPoetry

Big Tent Poetry offers a Wordle of words: fondle, crumple, purse, sapient, proof, pattern, tincture, doff, futile, capitulate, glitch, caparison

Itinerant

with sapient new wariness
a tincture of iodine
he applied to the bloody bite
halving a full scale glitch

like the wondrous cover
of a very mean book
her patterned caparison
hid proof of the wild beast

he doffed his hat to that maid
who made fondling so futile ~
capitulated, crumpled his kerchief
then southward he fled

that winter is reluctant to turn over the reins.

Willows for Magpie Tales

Magpie Tales  offers another lovely image for prompt. Please go to the site to view it and to read others' writing.

Willows

somewhere
between middle night black
and the sweet blue of dawn

she saw from the window
a thundering over willows
as they whooped up the gorge

dizzied with yearning
she tumbled from her ledge
to be borne away by the cranes

a thousand in number
cranes who heard her craving
for their ultimate mending

somewhere
beyond middle night black
toward the sweet blue of dawn

Chocolate for Sunday Scribblings

Sunday Scribblings posts prompt: Recipe

At the risk of receiving far more sympathy than I rightfully deserve, I'll post two time-honored faves.

The first is 3-hole chocolate cake:
1-1/2 C flour, 1 C sugar, 3 TBS cocoa, 1 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 TBS vinegar, 6 TBS salad oil, 1 tsp vanilla, 1 C cold water.
Combine dry ingredients in an ungreased 9-inch square pan. Make three holes and pour oil into one, vinegar into the second and vanilla into the third. Pour cold water over all. Mix with rubber spatula until blended - do not beat. Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Serve warm with a pat of butter if you're impatient.

Otherwise Frosting
1/2 C sugar, 1-1/2 TBS cornstarch, 1 1-oz square unsweetened chocolate, dash of salt, 1/2 C boiling water, 1 1/2 TBS butter, 1/2 tsp vanilla.
Mix sugar and cornstarch, add chocolate, salt. Add water, cook until mixture thickens. Remove from heat, add butter and vanilla. Mix well. Spread while hot on 3-hole cake. Aaaaaah

The second is even speedier and makes a superb late night snack. In the microwave, melt a square of one Hershey dark chocolate bar on top of 1/2 C of Cheerios. Takes about 15 seconds. Stir and munch. Yum. If you like chocolate and Cheerios. Do you?

Payday Friday for Big Tent Poetry

Big Tent Poetry   Write down any interesting words you hear. Pick them for sound, for interest, out of curiosity or for any reason that tickles or piques you.Write down a dozen words and then use three to six (or so) of them in a new poem.

Payday Friday

hemp's hazy smoke
circles plastic gods
who squat at the rail
like resplendent kumquats

appetites for right
explode over the tip jar
and bourbon furies
dent a silver shaker

one single nape
in each meaty hand
the hulky bouncer
bends raucous out the door

dusty rose fuchsias
gape and hug their pots
hemp's hazy smoke
circles plastic gods

Q for ABC Wednesday

ABC WEDNESDAY ROUND 6: Q is for Quizzical

Quintessential Questions?

Last week I watched a most amazing thirty-six minute video by Fora TV  in which the Swedish database programmer described information available on Google. Fascinating speech. Boggling and mind stretching.

'Data visualizations for a changing world:
The Google Public Data Explorer makes large datasets easy to explore, visualize and communicate. As the charts and maps animate over time, the changes in the world become easier to understand. You don't have to be a data expert to navigate between different views, make your own comparisons, and share your findings.' - Google

Drill down by category in this database to find answers to questions you might not have considered. The information is readily available if you choose to investigate the why and wherefore of facts relative to each category. Play around with drop down dialog boxes to compare changing graphs/lines by years, countries and other parameters.

I spent quite some time looking at the database and plan to return as soon as other questions arise. I question, though, that it will answer every one. What is your question that might be answered by the Google Data Explorer?

Private Eye for Magpie Tales

Magpie Tales posts: Write a short vignette or poem using this picture as your inspiration.

Private Eye

lightly poached
a yolk of eye
rests on a bed of
wilted browns

its soul window
closed and locked
secret encased
in a missing jar

lovers pursue
the absent key
for a single sample
of this yolk of eye

Barking for Stars

The first Big Tent Poetry prompt is, naturally, related to the circus.

Barking for Stars

Step right up!
Stella's at her best
Step right up!
Stella tracks the stars
Reads your rites
Lines your route to riches
Step right up!
Stella times your life
Shows you when to jump
When to shout
And when to let dogs lie
Step right up!
See Stella at her best
Step right up!

A second swig of gin
From my faux water cup
Loosens me up
Like Stella never did

Step right up!

P for ABC Wednesday

ABC WEDNESDAY ROUND 6: P is for...

Puzzles

I'm a jigsaw puzzle fan and in this lifetime alone have probably assembled a bazillion. Occasionally, I like one well enough to work twice or use ModPodge to convert it to a hanging thingy til it gets dusty or boring!

But this tiny program is my favorite for now. It uses my photographs or images to create puzzles to work right on the computer monitor. There are several sizes to play.

It surprises little poppets who are learning to manipulate mouse and pieces. They are tickled to find a picture they recognize and especially pleased when they see themselves in a completed puzzle.

The added bonus is that when your ISP goes missing you can play offline! It makes a nice little distraction and there's nothing to pick up or put away. The url:  http://puzzle.watype.net/
I think it's easier than Sudoku. At least for this week. What do you think? Do you love puzzles?
