X for ABC Wednesday

Xanthic - yellow, yellowish

Breaking through gray clouds pregnant with rain, a bright xanthic orb brightens the sky and warms the shadows. A pile of shoes shed near the front door during cold and dark are now ignored in favor of rubbing sole to earth and feeling the purr.

Oh, yes, pour me a full summer!

What if...for BigTentPoetry

Big Tent Poetry prompt: Start at the top of a page, “I want to write about __________, but I don’t know how.”

What if...

I want to write about broken lives,
sad crumbs transformed from good

death that goes unnoticed
dreams that die in blood-soaked sand

the linear who threaten from a box
hate by rote and know no answers

faith that elevates evil and ugly
and screamers loath to offer sanity

failing infrastructure
and pain that knocks in the night

instead, I'll write about this iris
freshened on the fourth of summer
under a swirl of aging rain

W for ABC Wednesday

ABC WEDNESDAY ROUND 6: W is for Wednesday

I'm not sure how old this washing machine is  - but no matter how many times I fill it with laundry I never fail to wonder about the wording in this warning. Does it mean what it says, or does it mean what it thinks it says? The first two lines are so wise.

The third: 'Failure to do so...' confuses me. It reads like a double negative to me. Sometimes I think about painting that line out but what would I ponder while waiting for the tub to fill?

Scissors and Knives for Magpie Tales

Magpie Tales 19   Please visit the Magpie site to view the image prompt for which this was written and to see what others wrote.  This is a previously published poem  but it when I saw the prompt, it came into my mind and didn't leave.

Scissors and Knives

Young unblinking eyes
brand me a stranger
in that Frankfurt square
where shawled women
walk with unwrapped bread
and fabric bags of produce.
Outside a temporary rental
my landlord bends to clip the grass
with scissors used to trim his beard,
the same tool splits domestic hare
into Sunday night's entree.
Germans have shears
and a war bunker up the street;
the Swiss have army knives.

Re-Sent for Big Tent

Wordle word prompt from Big Tent Poetry:
resent, praise, hungry, milk, cough, dull, stars, dangerous, comfort, part, dark

stars draw pictures on the night
with a cough of milky light
into the shadows dark

creating comfort art to dull
the dangerous fear that strikes
within the midnight black

dawn gives rise to a longing
a hunger for a greater space
a stellar sky and a sudden breeze

she offers prayerful praise
for dark shadows calmed when
stars draw pictures on the night

V for ABC Wednesday

Vivers in shades of ripe and ready.
Victuals straight from the plant.
I'm dancing with anticipation.
The viridity of being!
Last year's photo gives rise to this year's yearn.

Pre-Release for Magpie Tales

Magpie Tales offers an image prompt on Thursdays. Post response by Tuesday morning. Please visit the site to view the image.

cupped by honor's round
story sticks

silent stalwart pick-up sticks
upright in memory cup
wait to sketch the thoughts
she cannot carve

graphite safely disguised
as a functional tool
to dispense those views
she cannot share

erasers nibbled away
tips sharpened time and again
the cup will switch to empty
when her words begin to spill

Endings are the Same ~ Big Tent Poetry

Big Tent Poetry prompts:   Emotion is in our poetry – on some level, be it evocative or exploratory, empathetic or explosive. This week’s prompt is about anger.

Endings are the Same

born with thunder
and the dark of storms
she outruns luck

buys high, sells low
bets on losers
stays 'til the lights come on

curious, she lingers
countersinks all counsel
claps and calls una mas, una mas

shilling for a bettor's win
she deals to change that final finish
hangs 'til the light comes on

U for ABC Wednesday

Under the Hoya

This plant began as a cutting from Mother's hoya after her untimely death twenty-four years ago. Its green leaves now wind in and out and all around to cover the entire window sill area plus a little more.

When Jen, who has been the main caretaker for this special hoya, mentioned that it was blooming, I raced to take a picture since it had been a long time since I'd seen a hoya blossom.

Good job, Jen!

Tamped Down Taupe for Magpie Tales

Magpie Tales offers a wonderful prompt by image on each Thursday morning. Responses are due before the following Tuesday morning. View the image at the site and read what others wrote. It's a fine trip.

Tamped Down Taupe

released from shades of gray
formed by sackcloth taupe
she sings of burning hope
sends it off to sky blue orbit

expectations sold
she cries out to the wind
dreamers' old stories
now sheer with overuse

the cocoon spat her out
with wings too wet to fly
she shuts her mouth
hums new shades of taupe

A fractal.

Roundabout for Big Tent

Big Tent Poetry prompts: Write about something you would love to do but have never dared. Maybe you are indeed a poet who lives on the edge.

her wildest dreams
dangle from
a thousand limbs
scene by scene

from nun to not
and back again
from poor to loaded
and back again

daring times
seized in bulky terms
until the reaper knocks
then stalks her cells

pulls her down
to ripple through the mire
life by the second and
full days be damned

stung by commonplace
she survives without thrill
but by prayer, one step up
and one step back again

Post processed fractal.

T for ABC Wednesday

Oftentimes I thrive on doing things that cause anxiety in others.

Dandelions and I gave up our fight (I didn't win) and I learned to love thistles.

They each have such unusual beauty. And they require absolutely nothing. They grow without fertilizer, without water, without conversation. They just are.

It was several years before I actually connected floating thistledown with the actual thistle. Very like dandelion parachutes. How typical of me to avoid details.

Dandelions have many uses, including wine, but I'm not sure how valuable the thistle is. Do you know?
