Poem for Big Tent Poetry

A Baker's Dozen

legend says
the thirteenth witch
frees the owlies

rabid shrieks
shear the night
stir the coven's twelve

a baker's dozen
makes the tipping point
sets off backstabbing

thirteen witches
whistle up the demons
so says the legend

A fractal image.

This struck a chord with me as I bought a book yesterday called The Owl Killers - about witchcraft and the Dark Ages. Stirring poem.

I like that third stanza, thirteen being the tipping point, and the title is perfect.

Deliciously chilling. Love the alliteration in "rabid shrieks shear the night."

I can hear the narrator dramatically reciting this - with a sparkle and wink in the eye. Especially liked the imagery in the lines:

rabid shrieks
shear the night

It's got a legendary feel. Anything with witches is interesting.

Nice legend ;-) So many witches... Could be a Witches' Congress :-)

Suitably unsettling, and that picture... yow. Makes me think of the legendary associations between witches and screech owls.

Love the title and how it goes to something so completely surprising. (I loved this prompt. So rich!)
