Poem for TOP

Totally Optional Prompt suggests Humor.

I rarely write humor poetry so this is an older post - and it may be more true than funny! :)

Aging gracefully’
predicts the glossy mag’s theme
and through plastic faces
indulgent seniors beam
and brag of lusty trysts
in distant places.

Keep a smile on your lips,
the beautifuls insist,
and a flirt upon your hips.
When passing mirrors, however,
I give thanks,
for eyesight now gone blurry.

Clad in a tie-dyed floor-length T,
doubling as dress or nightie,
sans sucks, tucks or peels
I wonder who
let the air out of my arms,
brought my thighs to my knees,
and moved my fanny fat to tummy.

An all-day smile is not my way,
sometimes hateful thoughts
spill blithely from my lips.
Aging gracefully?
I’m simply darned grateful
to retain my ancient hips.

Haiku for 3WW

Bone, the moderator of Three Word Wednesday says:

Each week, I post some words. People write things using the words. Then they comment here. Feel free to join in this energetic meme! The words for this week are: Gamble ~ Omitted ~ Temporary

I say:

Sometimes the prompt words enter my head and sit there...unwilling to be moved about or disturbed. The outcome is decided before I write.

life's temporary
a mud-in-your-eye gamble
when map's omitted

Solace

Prompt by Sunday Scribblings.

Solace.

Family and nature provide solace and comfort for me. Fortunately, all but one family member live near here and communication is easy with the one who lives on the west side of Washington but visits here as often as her work permits.

Strangely, the Southwest desert draws my attention when seeking solace even though tall white pines and cedars surrounding 'our' lake are impressive and happy-making.

spirits on a stick
circle prickly pear
ring the rosy
dance the moons away

at the foot of lofty
spears of hoodoo
stories trickle
by ocotillo thorns

over terra cotta rock
in that arid land where
rain returns to dust
long before it falls

A Poem for Friday 5

Poefusion's Friday 5 includes the following words as prompt:

trellis
appearance
defect
youngster
laundry

Monday's Wash

a leggy vine of yellow
the clematis vacates
a peeling-paint trellis,
she supplants the
blooms' appearance
with wet laundry hung
above the dried defect,
her youngster shudders
knows he'll find splinters
in his draping shorts

A Foreign Land for TOP

Totally Optional Prompts says: Write about a foreign country. If you've never been to one, invent one. Actually, even if you have been to one, feel free to invent one.

The prompt opened a new world as I rarely write poetry from this venue...

Harmony in Dark

tropical branches
reach deep in the night
splintering moonlight
into wee silver shards

I tread on earth older
than conquistadores
to a bridge spanning
warm rustling water

from the friendly dark
came a native bard
to share tequila from
a ripened coconut cup

in two tongues we mused
of stars and deathless dreams
in a night moist and warm
a night only meant for love

brought to mind an earlier encounter with this weed du jour which seeded itself very near the raspberries.

Poem and One Word

Totally Optional Prompts suggests a ghazal for this week's theme.

I staggered around the entire week and failed to ignite a tiny flame for this form. My muse seems to have turned toes up and moved to more lucrative venues.

Staggering did bring me to this site, however. Check out One Word. Even though I didn't succeed here, either, I'll keep plugging away. :)

In lieu of new stuff, here's an old thing that I still like:

A Spill of Dawn

ashes of the mystic
solid as the dark
gritty in its ending

totems and taboos
wrap the fiction
of belief

no amount of voodoo
can halt the nightmare
of these days

Moe

Totally Optional Prompts: The first giraffe in France arrived in Paris on June 30, 1827. Gosh, I wonder what that was like. And, I wonder what is like that.

Moe, best man
at owners' wedding,
swapped his cage
for forest.
A potty-trained mid-age chimp,
Moe still hunts Charmin.

Missing Moe

I suspect the woodland chicadees and seagulls are as surprised to see a mannerly chimp in their neck of the woods as the French were to meet their first giraffe.

This poem is a Shadorma ~ a Spanish 6-line syllabic poem of 3/5/3/3/7/5 syllable lines.

Happy 4th!
