Poem for TOP

Totally Optional Prompt suggests Humor.

I rarely write humor poetry so this is an older post - and it may be more true than funny! :)

Aging gracefully’
predicts the glossy mag’s theme
and through plastic faces
indulgent seniors beam
and brag of lusty trysts
in distant places.

Keep a smile on your lips,
the beautifuls insist,
and a flirt upon your hips.
When passing mirrors, however,
I give thanks,
for eyesight now gone blurry.

Clad in a tie-dyed floor-length T,
doubling as dress or nightie,
sans sucks, tucks or peels
I wonder who
let the air out of my arms,
brought my thighs to my knees,
and moved my fanny fat to tummy.

An all-day smile is not my way,
sometimes hateful thoughts
spill blithely from my lips.
Aging gracefully?
I’m simply darned grateful
to retain my ancient hips.

Time Travel

stumble beyond the halfway
slowing to minimum speed
somewhere dead ahead
of the second dawn

I find my wanderlust
broken down to wanderrust
and judge it's no disgrace
to avoid the human race ~

surging anywhere it isn't,
I'm not greatly motivated
by traveling for its own sake
to see things first or twice

but that old Wells machine
does crank my yearn
to scrap midlife routine

He

A disclaimer: I don't know him, I don't know her - the Three Word Wednesday prompt words popped up, fell out and here they're written in a mild haiku format.

He

seeking slight comfort
imagined his old girlfriend
missing their past

meanwhile

his slight ex-girlfriend
seeking shells on Sanibel
imagined him ~ not

Fridge Space

snow falls higher
than my shoulder blades
buries sprawling sumac
cold seeps indoors
utility meter spins but
heat hides til summer

when frosting in my space
is too nasty to bear
I prop open the fridge door
bask in warmer air

Writes of Mother Nature

Dear Residents,

Tomorrow will be cloudy. Cloudy with rain. Great heavy gray sheets of rain. Rain enough to rehydrate a mummy. There will be flash floods. Jagged gashes will split the sky and fill the air with the single sound of a thousand drums.

You have been whining about lack of rain. You have been forecasting a big year for wildfires.

Tonight, your weather forecaster will consult his doppler and chase his tail around the map in pursuit of flashing colors. He will generously promise sunshine tomorrow. He believes. He and his machine are wonderful playthings. He is such a fool, but he should fool with someone else.

Tomorrow will be cloudy with rain and rain.

Love,
Mother Nature

Bird Flu

Hiller buried under down
shivers, shakes and sweats
vexed by sounds
soaring through warm air

swimming in his pool
filter death by feathers
it refused to let him be
no escaping those eyeballs

spying, stalking, haunting
a duck forever watching
anatidaephobia was his

Down from Under, watercolor by Sue

from Wikipedia:Anatidaephobia — fear that somewhere, somehow, a duck is watching you (fictional, from a Gary Larson cartoon published in The Far Side Gallery, 4).

Wii, Mii and They

I might have spoken too soon regarding Wii bowling with grandkids.

Last weekend I Wii'd with the fave 4-year- old and faced an uphill battle. It was his first time and he didn't give a rip about form. Matter-of-fact, I gasped when he threw the ball overhand one time and high-fived me when the pins scattered. More concerned about form, I worked very hard to garner an almost tie game.

I'll have to make a choice soon. Practice more OR be whupped by a short, young alpha male.

Today, I read about a man, who at age 106, still bowls in league and...well, you can read the rest of the story here. Amazing! It gives me hope. When form is gone, function remains, maybe.

Eggs and Oranges

albedo (al-BEE-doh) noun ~ as presented by AWAD (A word a day)
1. The fraction of light reflected from a body or surface.
2. The white, spongy inner lining of a citrus fruit rind.

I love this word and could have used it recently. My favorite 4-year-old asked me to peel an orange for him. I did. He then requested that I take 'the scrambled eggs' off the sections. Will I ever have another opportunity to use this word?

This link to the list of banished words for 2007 earns my approval - not difficult to do, after all. As a confirmed wordlover I find ... never mind, that word's overused and banished. I wish I'd use my increased vocabulary rather than grab the handiest and most boring one on the front of my tongue.
