Promise

Promise? Cross your heart and hope to die? Stick a needle in your eye?

As a child, I accepted those vows seriously. As a young adult, I learned that promises were offered easily but oftentimes without backbone.

'I never promised you a rose garden' was a song phrase that provided an out for those who deemed it necessary to 'unvow' their promise.

Retrospecting, a hobby that comes easily to me, finds that sometimes I accepted promises that were never uttered - only assumed.

The promise of a spring that follows surely on the heels of a hard, cold winter has so far always manifested but just because it always has is no sign that it always will. The seesaw between cynicism and trust is my inner perpetual motion. And, having said that...

Promise? Cross your heart?...

Promises said, promises implied and promises wished for. Promises kept and promises broken. I stopped making promises years ago. It's a minefield!

Good one. How often don't we assume a promise without even realising it. How heavy loaded is the word promise.

I too have trust issues, and seesaw between faith and skepticism. Does that make me a hypocrite I wonder...Possibly...but I like to play it safe too!

yes, there's a lot to the idea of 'promise'... pain, hope, disappointment, faith. Do we trust a promise? Do we believe in it?

Me, I love a promise - its like a gamble...and I love how you made me think more on the subject.

blessings, d

Beautifully said. That "seesaw between cynicism and trust" is a difficult balancing act for sure.

interesting post. I really never worry about promises. I keep them whenever I can (implied or stated) and the people who have made them to me have usually kept them too. I am fortunate. I do have a couple of big promises out there too... that would be life altering if they went south... so lets hope my luck holds out! lol

Well i sit here in awe!

It is funny how we sit and read other peoples thoughts and think wow! You are so right!

Very beautifully written! I wish people would keep their promises more or else not promise at all.

I also loved the line: "The seesaw between cynicism and trust is my inner perpetual motion."

When you've loved deeply and then been hurt or betrayed by those you love, it's hard not to be a cynic. But on the other hand, one cannot really feel alive without being vulnerable and open to all the exquisite joy and pain of love.
