Kismet for ABC Wednesday

Kismet: fate, destiny

I remember when this word was often heard. It sounded magical, mystical and happily maybe-ish. Now it reminds me to take a nap without feeling forced to take action because whatever happens was going to anyway. :)

In the 1950's, there were several movies and musicals which bore the Kismet title.

Kismet, as advanced by MIT, is an expressive robotic creature tailored to natural human communication channels and can be seen at this link:   http://www.ai.mit.edu/projects/humanoid-robotics-group/kismet/kismet.html

There is also Kismet software which is an 802.11 layer2 wireless network detector, sniffer, and intrusion detection system.

And my new favorite Kismet: a Finnish candy bar of crisp waffle and nougat covered in milk chocolate.

Who knew?

Tess Kincaid of Magpie Tales offers a weekly image for writerly prompt. This week:

staring at myself
displeased with the puffy hands
the mouth full of thin
he brushed the daylight dark
and dyed me as a stranger

Poem for Big Tent Poetry

Big Tent Poetry prompts: This week we are going to try bending, maybe even breaking & re-stitching words together using Poetry Toys.

Playing with different resources while using my own words produced the following:

Cyclone of Stars

Orion's belt rises as he stalks the Pleiades
Andromeda cradle-rocks her stellar nursery
the bleeding hand of tides rises and falls
driftwood kiva reflects in a froth of pool

soft as dandelion parachutes in falling dusk
half an hourglass disguises the end of day
hanging on to the tail of a dream
a snarling wind unboxes a cyclone of stars

built like a house of cards, the light lets go
as if it had never been involved
in the last dregs of the passing
nightjars hieroglyph a song into the dust

J for ABC Wednesday

Two days short of two years ago, I posted Janus for ABC Wednesday for the first time. I re-read it and discovered that nearly all of the commenters are still playing this delightful ABC Wednesday meme. I decided to repost Just for fun and because, in all that time, change has happened but some things Just don't change.

What Janus Sees

Pocked by nimble hooves
five o’clock stubble clings,
stubborn in wind-chilled sun.
One six-pack of scrub jays
scatters the silence,
tepid spring forces its way
upon the barren brow
defined by seasoned gray.

Tanka for Magpie Tales #58

Willow prompts weekly with an enigmatic image to draw words from writers. This week:

a sword swallowing
marked the battle finale
tassels set a-twirl
forgotten wars rise again
replay the old times' folly

Cabin Fever for Big Tent Poetry

Big Tent Poetry prompts for a poem about being stuck.

Cabin Fever

on the other side
of yesterday
movement sticks

untenable future
unbendable past
a wishy-washy now

the cusp of today rotates
like a dejected pup
re-winds in multi-haze

re-runs and re-casts
the same weak scenes
that time once stopped

she leans into wabi sabi
relieves the pressure
still, movement sticks

Infomania for ABC Wednesday

ABC Wednesday prompts with I

I have acquired infomania ~ an excessive devotion to accumulating facts.

As a kid, I yearned to live in a library where thousands of books were within easy reach. That desire remained and with access to the Internet, I've become my own worst enemy.

Afraid of missing something, I surf and skim, scan and seek until my eyes are red and my mind frazzled. Since no one asks, I keep filling my own mind with ideas and stuff until it resembles my closets which bulge with unnecessary stuff.

I'm not sure if there's a cure other than quitting cold turkey. Do you know?

Heedless for Big Tent Poetry

Big Tent Poetry offers: Write a poem of science.

Heedless

a punched tin ceiling
stutters with stars
leaks pinpoints
on dry khaki hills

disguises the blind spot
where danger comes
where shadows rhyme
as the darkness grows

heedless of warnings
they cry in the night
their cities displaced
when science shuts down

H for ABC Wednesday

ABC Wednesday - H

Halomancy is an ancient form of divination using salt. In one method, the diviner casts salt crystals into the air and interprets the patterns as it falls to the ground or travels through the air.

Himalayan salt lamps (WBM 8-Inch Himalayan Natural Crystal Salt Lamp with Bulb and Cord) work as air purifiers by emitting negative ions into the air and light therapy to reduce stress and increase energy. My daughter gave me one that provides a special light and wonderful vibes.

My cooking granddaughter hooked me up to this site to study astonishing forms of salts and Himalayan salt blocks that are used in cooking: http://www.atthemeadow.com/shop/Gourmet-Sea-Salt  Hardly anything I'd use with my limited culinary skills but it stirs my head.

Did you notice this post began with H and rapidly turned to Salt?

Genie for Big Tent Poetry

Big Tent Poetry prompts with:

One dozen words: flame ~ question ~ typical ~ boyish ~ tangle ~ parade ~ thigh ~ defy ~ smile ~ gasp ~ slip ~ wake
AND
Three phrases: “Say more,” “There is also the matter of ____” and “He started by _____.”

Genie

a typical parade, a chorus of runes
wakes the genie with a boyish smile
his tangle of flame slips with a gasp

the measure of time pricks my thigh
defies doubt that hangs round my neck
entrenched in that rusty skeleton key

rubbing his bright amber talisman
I question him with a puckish plea
beg him to say more to pleasure me

he starts with soothing words breathed
in an acquiescent sigh then confesses
there is also the matter of...

the genie with a boyish smile
slips with a gasp into tangles of flames
a chorus of runes, the usual parade
