When Orange is Gone for BTP

Big Tent Poetry prompts:  Step outside your house.

When Orange is Gone

the pond is buried
swathed by winter's shroud
against the dying time

naked trees stand down
against a battleship sky
shooting pellets of cold

bones bared by the rake
pop up in unlikely spots
a warning not to plan ~

to wait it out and see
if spring bursts with life
and ends another dying time

I'm a spring/summer person and find the color of autumn to be a forecast of white, white, white and bitter cold. It takes me a bit to acclimate, so this was the first impression of a recent morning. I'll probably be okay next week. :)

Susan, your poem is a good one. I feel a bit of a chill as I read it. We are having a few beautiful fall days here. Not looking for winter. Want orange to last a while yet.

I look forward to the coolness of fall and the coldness of winter. The Canadian in me, LOL. I can tell you like the beauty of fall but hate winter. Spring will always return, Susan.

Orange is a symbol for what brings pleasure. I relate to your poem for that reason. I love the line about the bones.

That is one clever poem. Every line prompted an image and not a word wasted!
And '...wait it out and see
if spring bursts with life'.
Not much choice really but to rug up and wait for spring's magic.

Hope you are feeling better!

Such vivid descriptions- I can almost feel the first snowflakes... I'm not much of a winter person either-- too busy enjoying our lovely Indian summer here.

Wonderful Sue. I really love this. It has been such a hot humid summer I must admit I happy to see the leaves turn.

There's a bleakness but also a beauty in your words. I love the first stanza and the repeated phrase at the end.

A chilling poem indeed, especially with the "if" in the final stanza.

Oh this is wonderful Sue. I love Autumn so I don't have these same feelings but you've described how many people do feel with this change in season. Excellent!

LOVE your header.

The dying of the year...if you lived in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory in Canada, it would already be early winter. Summer is intense there, short and fall is an eyeblink. I think of this because I have two friends, one in Whitehorse and one nearby and they have shown me pictures of the first snowfall. Soon it will be mostly dark all day round.

G' Day From Australia, We're in the middle of spring with summer just around the corner. Can't wait for summer as winter is very dull and bleak for me. I just love all the colours and perfumes that spring and summer bring.

autumn hits me like that too quite often - luckily there's the awesome beauty of turning leaves to compensate for the chill and grey skies... loved your poem

One can feel a bit sad in Autumn as we contemplate Nature's long period of dormancy. In the end Spring will burst with life!
