October
Retrograde Mercury
crosses the sky
triggers an Ichabod night
pines tease their taproots
my trousers cuff at curling leaves
churned by corkscrew winds
one brave star dots the lonely dark
retreats behind boiling wings
sweeping black the sky
tomorrow the sun will rise
above the ides of night
and calm will claim the day

A delight to read! :o)
beautiful poetry!
a pleasure to read
The Autumn you describe ~ an Ichabod night ~ perfect!
This poem deserves an award and at the very minimum a submission to the New Yorker. Truly inspiring.
A Halloween autumn night. Very nice.
Come on, somebody. Tell me what an Ichabod night is. I don't think we have them where I come from. The other images are apt, to say the least.
Clever... an Ichabod night? Things that go bump in the night I think?
Ichabod Night....is that where the Headless Rider appears? Or when
someone falls asleep for 100 years?
Regardless- I love the blustery Fall feel of your poem!
always beware that mercury in retrograde....love you reference to the stars and universe...very nice...bkm
Gorgeous imagery!
And calm will claim the night... ;)
LOVED that Ichabod night best. Just got done ready Sleepy Hollow myself.
Nice poem.
Some great images here. The first verse gets it off to a cracking start and the last snaps it shut beautifully.
Plain beauty... i loved the imagery you portrayed... "one brave star dots the lonely dark" --loved it..Great mag.
I already have my sweater on: Oh how I'm already missing my short pants and no need for trouser cuffs in the leaves.
"..one brave star dots the lonely dark
retreats behind boiling wings
sweeping black the sky.." Such a beautiful verse.
I love the language here, and the mix of the real with folklore.
I just love the "Ichabod night." Nicely written!
You made my heart tumble with this beautiful poem Tumblewords! :-)
Beautiful, picturesque....
Nicely done.
So well expressed ! Loved it !
your words flow like the floating leaves.
cool tale.
this is gorgeous..the imagery, the wordplay...magnificent
what fun word play...ichabod night...ides of night...very nice magpie...
Wonderful spooky undertone, quite a way with words ..I could see every detail and happy for the dawn!
Hooley Dooley. What a delight. I am doing the 'I bow to you' dance right now. You just stagger me.
Beautifully written. The creativity throughout, the freshness, is something that's beyond me when I write.
I especially like "my trousers cuff at curling leaves/churned by corkscrew winds."
Yikes, I think I got a glimpse of a headless horseman riding by the light of that one lone star! You really set the scene for a windy October night.
"my trousers cuff at curling leaves"
Nice line Tumblewords. Makes me feel like I'm walking ankle deep in leaves even thought that never happens in my non deciduous environment. WOuld you believe there is a town called Tumbulgum in my part of the world. It would perhaps be a good place for a Tumblewords person to hark from.
Wonderful! My fsvourite is the last stanza.
Snappy imagery -- crackles like an October night. Nice.
Very nice magpie! Very Halloweenish indeed!
I love that Ichabod night!
Wonderful images here. My favorite: "corkscrew winds". The words paint a picture in my mind.
Retrograde Mercury, Ichabod nights, corkscrew winds, boiling wings... and then the calm - a wealth of images and feelings.
Lovely poem, wonderful use of words.
Lovely work, I really like the trouser cuff image...
ooh! wonderful. I love the combination of words like "corkscrew winds" and "ichabod night"!
Love the associations--an Ichabod night, with ides! Clever and evocative. Thank you for sharing.
I wish I could write like you! Alas, my talent is so minimal and you soar with eagles. Beautiful!
Wow! Beautiful Tumblewords!
Masterful!
So beautifully descriptive it is as if I took the walk in those cuffed pants myself! (I am only now getting around to reading Magpie #35 at other blogs. Have been so behind that I won't allow myself to even look at the prompts for #36 and #37 yet....)
