Temporary
it was a walking aid
and only that
not an excuse
it was a walking aid
and only that
she leaned
feared to give it up
it became her excuse
her ball and chain
her support and her staff
...a stick that stifled life

sometimes the things we rely on are not doing us any good are they.
well done!
"a stick that stifled life" Great!
Contemplative. Gives new meaning to the word "crutch"...
I love the metaphoric element here. Well done.
My mom could have written this! Exactly how she feels about her cane.
You're right a stick does stifle life, its like you're old before you are with a stick.

in many ways the trials of life become what we make of them...an aid or an anchor...nice magpie!
ah Tumblewords - how quickly we learn to clutch that which should free us
nicely put
"Temporary," indeed, how fragile we all are. "Her ball and chain" -- how wonderfully put! This is a great magpie.
You say so much in so few words. A great gift, Tumblewords!
It is a painful poem because of the truth in it. It goes right to the heart.
Well done.
And thank you for stopping by.
Some people are embarrassed to walk with a stick, others are proud. It all depends on your perspective.
Good poem, much thought.

A profound short poem --- I have seen both sides -- some are happy to be able to walk again -- others well the reality of the frailness of our lives.
Nice

I pray for her strength and clarity..we are what we are, and so be it!
you make the tale absolutely beautiful!
very shining magpie!
Great job girl, it is so true. I once had such back trouble I wanted my chiropractor to give me a handicapped sticker. He said I don't give those out. You need to walk. This is so true. Great job for Magpie Tales.

Your story reminds me of the time my daughter sprained her ankle badly. It really hurt and she had to use crutches to get around. But long after the time she should have been able to support her weight on that ankle again, she wouldn't give them up. I finally had to take them away to get her to walk on her foot. The aide became the crutch.
This was imaginative and poignant. It is very easy to turn an aid into a crutch.
Very cleverly wrought.
Sue,
I love your ability to tell profound slices of life so succintly with poetry!

Ouch! How can objects become such crutches? Are they only as powerful as we allow them to become. It didn't seem to worry Fred Astaire too much.
Insightful and very well written ...
what we first use to help us sometimes can turn on us and control us.
unique point of view from a prompt many are writing about.
It's true. We can become too dependent on such things. There is a great deal of comfort in a cane.
