M for ABC Wednesday

ABC WEDNESDAY ROUND 6: M is for...

Memories
Last week when I used the letter L for legends and leaving lullabies for family, several readers mentioned thoughts about saving their blogs.

My method is to use the portable version of Open Office which is free open source software compatible with Microsoft Office, Lotus and more. It includes a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation tool, drawing package and database. It consumes minimal space and performs all the magic I can manage.

Accessing my blog through the sign-in page/dashboard, I copy and paste to the word processor until there are as many pages as I want to keep in a file and then export that file to pdf format. It takes up very little space, can be viewed readily (complete with images) and its small size permits e-mailing with most programs.

I try to keep up with my blog month by month, save the pdf file to an external hard drive and at the end of the year publish it on Lulu.com for download in print or pdf format. My poetry books and novels are published the same way.

This method (or a similar one) might protect your blog from disappearance into Cyberia and might provide backup in case a copyright comes into question.

My opinion, only. :)  And those who know me say I have an abundance of them - opinions, that is. But maybe I have a motley mass of memories that family might want to look at sometime. Who knows?

This is a great idea! But I'm not sure I'm tech savvy enough to actually do this, and I wonder if it works with a mac. I would love to have my year of blogging in a little booklet like that, I'll have to check this out.

That is a great idea! Would like to do it, too, not sure I'm savvy enough either, but I am going to check it out! Thanks so much for the info! Have a great week!

Thanks for the tips! Love the term "cyberia" - and I've never heard of Lulu.com so I'll have to check it out!

I save my blog posts weekly in something called tabbloid.com - I get a PDF every Monday. Itr's free.

I'm going to try to do that! I'll put it on one of those flash drives. Great idea!

What an excellent idea - off to investigate forthwith :)

What a great idea. I would probably have to fiddle around for about three days to get one page saved (knowing me), but it would be worth it. The ABC alone would be good fun...

Well, many people add sense to their opinions. They are always appreciated :-)

Great idea....I will be sure to check this out, as I think our blogs can be our legacy to our children..Anyway mine tends to be a type of diary.

Thanks for the "M"emories!

Too complicated I only use Evernotes and that's it. But I only use my computer for Internet nothing else.

I can totally see why you'd want to save all of your lovely words.

I've often thought my blog would come in handy in case I ever got Alzheimers...I could read about all the things I thought were important enough to record. But then I may not remember my password to get in so this is a great idea.

This idea is so much more useful than the boring old backup I perform, which isn't readily readable and certainly not printable. A really excellent tip! Thank you.

Wow. That is so cool : ) I hope that my son can come to this blog many years from now and see what adventures we were doing when he was little. I love him so.

Great idea, if I can figure out how to do it. It's something I've been thinking about for a while -- put my blogs in book form, that is -- not to sell but for myself.

I've often thought I should do that! And maybe I will someday... I have a back up of my blog, and I'm wondering if I can use that, or if I really do have to go through a post at a time and save it all separately. And what about pictures?

BTW, my site is back up now, if you tried earlier and failed. ;)

great idea. What I do is just copy all my posts and keep them on a flash drive

What a great idea. I might have to have one of the kids show me how (!) but I like it!
Thanks for that idea.

Wonderful! I think I will ask my son-in-love to read this and help me. I have four years of blogging.
Always enjoy your posts.
I am way behind...spring gardens are taking all my energy....
thank goodness for a rainy day.
