somewhere ahead of the wind
dry snow sweeps the prairie
horses, heads down, belly deep
and their butts to the blow
crunch and maul frozen hay
coats quiver, keep frostbite at bay,
lashes mascara'd with rime
like betty boop past her prime
dawn finds them standing
snow falling and wind blowing

Well, that had an effect. I'm shivering.
Excellent descriptive words.
The way you portray this opens up a new world to me, thoughtfully done!
A nice piece that gives us the particulars of a e world. Thanks.
This is the nearest I can get to experiencing the sort of cold you endure each winter. The 'lashes mascara'd with rime/betty boop past her prime' is an lovely image. I like the fractal too.
I'm with Watermaid - she quoted my favorite lines. Very 'brr'-inducing.
Such an amazing visual in your words. Sad yet profound! I always use horses as metaphors for resilience and strength. Very well done!
Hugs Giggles
you made me long for winter even i dont really like that season, lol
Really liked that one.
This is gorgeous, Sue.
I love this blog! Lovely just lovely.
I liked this very much. The lines were crisp and there was just enough ambiguity to make the imagination do a bit.
Cold...Freezing
I feel the cold! Chilled!
Welcome to poetry train!
frenzied entropies
Excellent. I particularly liked the white mascara effect of rime.
This is one of the crispest images you've created with words! Each line is like the click of a camera. The mascara? Brilliant!
I think Betty Boop was always past her prime. Good post.
I could see the ponies in the field covered in frost while reading this poem. I like the way the poem uses strong rhyming in the center.
