Sunday Scribblings prompts: What is your take on 'organic?'
I'm probably one of those cynics who view organic in terms of increased cost. There are several things that astound me when given to serious thought and not necessarily in order are the following food paradoxes:
..it costs more to have less sugar
..it costs more to have less caffeine
..it costs more to have less salt
..it costs more to have fruit, vegies and meat grown or raised without expensive pesticides and man-made chemicals (unless waste counts) Argh
When I shop at the local supermarket, albeit the smallest one I can find, it becomes apparent that locally grown organic goods are nearly double the price of those unhealthy (?) goods grown thousands of miles away and driven, flown, flown and driven to this little store. Somehow I feel guilty for not being green enough to appreciate the not-so-obvious-to-me attributes of organic.
But, in all honesty, every time I see the word organic I think of organdy fabric. How weird is that? This is one of my foibles I'm not trying to foist off on anyone.
I'm anxious to find out how the talented people on Sunday Scribblings view this particular word but I'm willing to bet there won't be another who thinks 'Oh, yeah, organdy.'

OK - I admit, I had to google organdy... weird part is that I know I've heard the term before, I think from my mom... and when I read the definition, I was like, "Duh, of course!" And I laughed! Thanks! :)
Can't say I thought of organdy, but I did think of increased cost of organic food. However, I went a totally different direction in my post.

Organdy, I like that word and I bet that I'll think of it next time I go to the supermarket too!
I guess if we demand it, good food grown organically, or organdy :), then the price goes down. Go figure!? We didn't ask for the chemicals but we must have bought into it when we were sleeping, or something!
I agree on ORGANIC food being too expensive to be bought regularly!

I like your organic/organie foible. It amuses me. Don't know why; we all ahve them - don't we? Your puzzlements have often been mine, too, but anything is better than pesticides, surely - almost anything.
Now that's an interesting word. I like it. As I see it, Big Biz just plays at green, applying cosmetic remedies to make us think they care. When in reality they're doing everything to scupper the green issue - such as making sure organic is expensive.
No organdy for me....however I agree with you! Luckily I have a sweet produce stand around the corner from me and also use another frequented produce store. The busier they are the better I feel about my purchase....nothing like a good turnover to be sure you're getting the freshest!

You're right! Organdy was definitely not what I thought of when I first saw this prompt. Takes a poetic mind to make a connection like that... one I'll be turning over in my mind (like compost -- that's organic, right?) for the rest of the day. Hope you're enjoying a wonderful weekend!

Love it! We seem to be singing off he same hymn sheet with our posts -even though I did spell organdy differently!
Oh, I KNOW! Isn't it horrifying? America has to be the only country in the world where our poor are actually overweight, thanks to all that sugar and salt.
I try to eat organically, but it's definitely a financial burden. At least the prices have gone down in the last two years, as more people have tried to do the same.
(Who knows, maybe someday EVERYONE will be able to afford pesticide-free apples! Imagine that! Hee hee.)

Did you mention that non-fat foods cost more than those with the organic fat that was there originally?
eating "healthy" does cost and puts so many people at a disadvantage because of the higher grocery bill....
lol...I love that you think of organdy fabric when you see 'organic'. But your post is so true! To think that the local organic food costs TONS more than the food brought in from other countries...??? It doesn't make logical sense, does it?

How come all of the things that are supposed to be good for us and good for the earth are bad for our pocketbook? We think alike, I'm sure you're sorry to hear me say!
the reason why organic produce cost more is mainly due to the length and tedious alternative cultural practices and the use of plant-based rather than synthetic pesticides/fertilizers which act faster...
it's also about demand and supporting local farmers...

the taste doesn't compare to
conventionally grown ones
while the difference is less visible/tangible in other produce especially thick-skinned bananas/oranges!!

Nope, I don't think of organdy, although you've got a good point.
As for the pricing, keep your eyes open. I've found a few nice options around me, and even if it costs a bit more (but not an astronomical amount), it's worth it 'cause the taste is soooo much better.
