Coffee

Sunday Scribblings prompts with: COFFEE. Feelings about it? Love, loathing, indifference? Is it an important part of your life?

Indifference is a word I never think of in conjunction with coffee.

The aroma of fresh coffee stirs my senses and never fails to take me back to childhood when the perking coffee on a wood stove served the same purpose as an alarm clock. I wasn't allowed to drink it but the fragrance was so divine I could hardly wait to age! (Now that I have, however,...)

That being said, may I add that coffee is similar to vanilla in that the incredible scent of well-being doesn't extend to the flavor. Vanilla sniffed from the tiny bottle is wonderful, the raw taste not so much. And coffee seems to offer the same similarity. The steam that rises from a freshly brewed cup is my favorite part. Once the coffee reaches my tongue, it changes. Completely. It doesn't taste like it smells ~ unlike dark chocolate which tastes exactly like I expect it to!

I can't remember the last day I went without a cup of coffee or two!

**

First light's cuppa joe
Alarm clock for sleepy brain
In the nick of time

**

Campfire heat
Chilly morning sun
Perked coffee

for me, the aroma and that first cup of coffee was divine. however, i cannot say the same with vanilla. i don't care for vanilla scents nor vanilla ice cream. i'm strictly a chocolate person. love hot chocolate, chocolate ice cream, well, to make it more simple, anything made with chocolate!

J;ve observed that same difference between smell and taste of coffee. Wgich doesn't mean that I don't like the taste. It's just that nothing could taste as good as coffee smells.

Your haikus are lovely. This is a post to savor.

I'm a tea drinker myself, but you're certainly right about the smell of coffee.
Your words brought that smell to mind perfectly.

I agree coffee doesn't taste the same as it smells, but that first cup of the morning is divine.

That early morning coffee aroma floating freely into the air is far and away the best part of camping!

That's true, the smell has a different dimension, while the taste can be a strike of intensity.

There's just something about campfire coffee, or camping and waking up to a perfectly perked pot of coffee on a cool crisp day. Love the Haiku! And thanks for the visual too. :)

Why do the smell and the taste not mesh?

Love this post - yes, coffee is life!

Coffee is indeed great value! Two sensations for the price of one. The smell and the taste, both different, both magical.

Ahhh...coffee.
I have had my morning coffee now for over 40 years! My doctor has encouraged me to give it up yet I cannot see how something that smells so good could possibly be detrimental to my health. I seem to taste with my nose!
Very fun Haikus.
There is a chill in the air this afternnon; a cup of coffee would be just perfect.
Thanks!
Sherry

I love the smell AND taste of coffee, but I know quite a few people who only like the smell. How interesting.

I love. love, love coffee. Dark. Strong and pure coffee. thank you for these.

Thank goodness at least dark chocolate lives up to its smell! :)

The smell of coffee is great! And strange how it doesn't taste how it smells! And as for vanilla I have a strange obsession with vanilla scented candles. Both smells make a place feel of homely and relaxing somehow!

Thank you for visiting! Your comments here remind me of my mother telling me I couldn't drink coffee unless I drank it black! So I began drinking coffee at 23 and still love each sip, complete with sugar and cream every time. :)

I enjoyed your description of the smell of coffee. It is a memory trigger for me too. I see my Grandma in the kitchen, pouring that first cup. Also enjoyed the Haiku. Been a long time since I wrote one.

Oh, and thank you for your comment. Really appreciate it!

I didn't realize it didn't taste the same as it smelled - that's facinating!

Me either … I start every day with coffee … even when I’m camping ;--)

I do think it is the aroma that leads people to coffee - and the strong memories of the aroma growing up, associating it with morning, a new day... it still affects me that way for, though I primarily drink tea and absolutely love it, it is the aroma of coffee that has that emotional pull.
