Space for Sunday Scribblings

These were the first words that came to mind when I read the Sunday Scribblings prompt: Out of this World

nebula - fractals - apophysis - the order of chaos - stepping stones - circling light - ephemeral belies rock solid underpinnings - magical - skybound rainbows - hidden by city lights - overshadowed - natural regeneration - mythical heroes personified in constellations - My UFO sighting

When I think of space, it's about the magical and ephemeral colors of the skybound rainbows named in numbers, ie, n44. Those ever fascinating nebulae increase my pleasure of fractals and the imaginative abstract. Exact order of chaos can be found in the night sky when city lights go dark.

The seduction of night, when earth lights hide the sins of man and glitter in ultimate fantasy, has always captured my passion. Dirt and disaster are generally not visible in the dark as lights from overhead ease the stress of day and blanket the night with perfection.

It's about money

Mad Kane says:
Here in the U.S., tax return day (April 15th) is looming. So today’s limerick and haiku theme is taxes and tax returns or, if you prefer, forms that drive you nuts.
My haiku:

they do not linger
they snub my tender welcome
...bucks just passing through

Heads or Tails

Heads or Tails prompt: Surprise.

The prompt took me off guard so this post might be a little more personal than usual...the recent month has been a series of personally rewarding surprises.

First. Spring knocked a couple of times but winter kept the door locked. So I didn't have to venture outside to clean up the fallen limbs and winter damage. Ah, a reprieve!

Second. New Verse News and Right Hand Pointing each published one of my poems. Taco Salad at the Lake, a photograph, is on the cover of Travel Post Monthly.

Third. I managed to 'draw a watercolor' on my new Wacom Bamboo Fun. I hope to get better - for sure, I can't get worse. At any rate, it's a whole new ball game and I was sorely in need of a boost. Cabin fever now comes in colors!

Other events, too, added to the month to make it a pleasant and surprising piece of time.

Thanks for reading my back slapping!

I just don't get it...

The Sunday Scribblings prompt for "I just don't get it...' is perfect for this time of year when spring peeks and leaves, when political bouts rage and when deception seems the order of the day.

Thinking about this topic reminded me of people who are too lazy to learn the truth. People who forward disinformation by byte-tons and the recipients who accept it as truth. People who fail to explore facts before espousing opinions or voting. People who follow a current fad without thinking.

From there, I wandered to computer malware, hackers, phishers and scammers. How do obviously intelligent people decide the only way to make a buck is to resort to crime? Is it too much to ask that they infect each other and leave regular folks alone?

From there, I found I spend too much time shaking my head or rolling my eyes and saying...'I just don't get it.'

Heads or Tails - Kitchen

Skittles Heads or Tails, hosted this week by Tidbits of Tippets, offers the prompt...March 18 - HEADS - Any part of (or place in) a house

Kitchen

The kitchen is my favorite part of the house. Sound strange for a non-cook?

My computer, printer, scanner, phone and all things digital use all but a slender slice of table. The two comfortable old barstools are made from vinyl coated clothesline fashioned around a slender metal frame. I use one and the other supports a batch of books and binders.

From my seat, I see through the living room window and through the dining room slider to the patio beyond.

I see the neighbor's garage wall, up close, out the kitchen window. Not so neat. I've thought about painting a flower field on it, but so far it's only a thought.

Cupboards that normal people would use for pots and pans hold watercolor supplies, computer CD's, camera paraphernalia, device chargers...and a traveling coffee mug which rarely leaves home.

That's part of my house. I won't tell you about the guest bathtub where plants 'winter' over.

Thanks for visiting!

Spellbound for Writers Island

I have a new toy. A gadget. You know me, I give up food, heat and clothes for gadgets. This is an impulse taken. And I'm Spellbound.

A Bamboo Fun by Wacom is in front of me. This is an amazing little item. Far more fun, but probably less productive, than my Roomba.

Bamboo Fun console came with a mouse and pen as well as Adobe Photoshop 5, Corel Painter Essentials 3 and Nik Color Efex Pro 2 GE.

USB connection and software upload allows drawing, editing or designing images (reflected in the computer monitor) using the pen or mouse on the pad. How cool is that?

Well, let me tell you. This is another learning curve that will keep me wide-eyed and wide-wondered until it's warm enough to get outside.

So far, I've only installed Photoshop. When I learn to operate that with my mouth closed and my eyes un-squinted, I'll install the next program.

Fascinating stuff. I'm so glad I wasn't born in the 1700's. Actually, maybe the next century would be an even better choice. I'll scribble that on my monitor for future editing. Just in case time machine technology kicks in.

Out from the Gloom

Michelle at Poefusion Friday 5 offers these five words for prompt: fizzy, sylph, freckled, rabble, suasion. It's a fun meme, come along and play!

One fizzy-headed sylph
clad in gauzy green
materializes
from the nether gloom,
from that freckled world
of a well-warped bush.

The see-through sylph
draws a shouting crowd
spouts a plot of fuzzy math
and browbeats rabble
in ill-based suasion
before retreating to her lair.

Wabi Sabi Simple, Page 123

Barbara, owner of Silverwheel Astrology, tagged me for this meme.

1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages).
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five people.

Ordinarily, I don't do tags but strangely enough I had bookmarked this page a few days ago! So...

Wabi Sabi Simple by Richard R. Powell
Three sentences from page 123.

The amygdala and the other structures of the limbic system have been in the animal population for millions of years, and they function largely automatically, coordinated and mediated by the cortex in more evolved animals. The cortex sorts and compares experiences and proves more accurate and discriminating abilities.

We humans also have a neocortex, an additional layer of cells in our brains that allows us not only to sort and compare experiences, but also to think about them, and speculate about them, and imagine events based on the experiences we have already had.

Green

Heads or Tails, the Tuesday meme from Skittles, offers the prompt of green.

A John Deere tractor is green and the following poem is about green.

March

Timid sun before its time
slips across frosty roofs
shines on eager buds
small as withered seed,
a laughing crow circles
drops his shadow
on split fence railing,
tree limbs rocked by breeze
dance with snowdrops
leaving shingled eaves,
sullen green grass
unwilling to be awakened
pouts crisply underfoot.
Spring knocks.

Writers Island - Rising

This week’s, and the twenty-fifth, Writer’s Island prompt is: “Rising”. Come along and play!

Bubbling Up

Questioning...

I never read prompt posts before I write my own.

After writing and posting, I read and see that some of the same words and thoughts have bubbled up, and I wonder. Where do the prompts come from? Do they fall from the same bucket of words that rise from each of our minds?

Comments, too. I read comments only after I write my own, yet many times the same statements are repeated. How odd is that?

How often do you read blogged prompts only to find you've written a similar post? Several times, I've searched for a specific and unusual word and found someone else used it as well.

Recently, I posted to my 2000 Mythsteries and Other Pithy Shorts blog and the next Newsweek cover carried the very unusual phrase I'd coined.

It feels like strong synchronicity or outright woohoo voodoo.

Has this happened to you? Do you read first, write later or vice versa?

If similar words wait on the surface, why are Powerball numbers so difficult to dig up?

Qualitative Experiment

Sunday Scribblings #101 -
The prompt this week is: "The Experiment" or "Experimental."

My response:

analysis
begins
calculated
data gathered
excel'd
footnotes listed
guidelines
hidden
input varietal
jiggered
kneaded
logic lost
missing cells
numbers chewed
opinion spat
political smiles
qualitative

spun in a false web
truth choked
unstated
views exposed
weird wins
x-ray's down
yawns abound
zipped files deleted

Stages

Mad Kane prompts - Life Stages. Come play along!

There are many and the most obvious is the one in which you currently fit. While the truth can be denied, fiction often tells it all.

A couple of contemporary haiku follow:

too early
timer off kilter
too late now

Flim Flam for Poefusion

Poefusion's Friday 5 offered these words: green, snug, snake, boggle, racket. This is a fun meme - feel free to join in...

Zeus

The Totally Optional Prompt for this week: Have you ever considered deliberately trying to use a different voice? To not sound just like yourself?

My response: I think this isn't my voice and probably never will be. It was an interesting experiment, however. Another voice follows.

*

Why, Father?

Did you care naught for Mother?
She adored and revered you,
you who were generous to strangers
and incensed by thieving traders.
How could you be cruel to Mother?

You fled the fear of your Father
conferred it to countless progeny
carried by a score of women.
Sweet Echo couldn't purge the grief
my Mother knew at your infidelity.

All in the heavens was yours
but you dishonored my Mother.
I beseeched the Oracle at Dodona
to meditate for answers
but none were forthcoming.

Why, Father?

Seven for Skittles

For the list of Seven from Skittles Heads or Tails prompt:

I look outside where the wind blows cold over the remaining layers of snow and see the damage that will need repaired when spring arrives. Somehow, the thought of hardware, chores and repair stays uppermost in my mind.

That being said, here are seven elements of that process.

Repair Ware:
nuts
bolts
screws
nails
washers

Once over the Rubicon

This week’s, and the twenty fourth, Writer’s Island prompt is: “Empowered”.

My response follows. There's nothing like a dance with death to empower a survivor.
